CLUB HISTORY

More info

The Fitzroy Cricket Club is situated in the eastern suburbs of New Plymouth and has been in the community for over 130 years. We host two age group representative teams, three senior teams and provide facilities for three local schools. We provide services for both competitive and recreational cricket.

Fitzroy Cricket Club is committed to creating a successful, inclusive, community and family based club with a fun, “village green” cricket atmosphere. We have an enthusiastic, hard working committee dedicated to improving the club and providing its members with the best possible gear and facilities.

Our committee believes that the objectives outlined above can be better fulfilled by encouraging the development of long term, reciprocal relationships with the local business community. Every year we have on-going and development initiatives that require funding.

When doing some historical digging on the Fitzroy Cricket Club we found the below article from 1884, which indicates the club has been around in one form or another since 1884

In 1953, now going under the name of the Smart Road Cricket Club. The season started once again in a cow paddock, this time owned by the Colson family on the corner of Smart and Colson Roads. Playing on the old style coconut fibre matting and battling the cow pats to the boundary only lasted half a season before the club relocated down to the old Waiwhakaiho Showgrounds. Situated in the Waiwhakaiho Valley the club still used the coconut matting but the out field was maintained by sheep, so the battle to the boundary was just as challenging!

In 1960 the Smart Road Club moved to the newly developed Peringa Park and re named itself Fitzroy due to the suburb of its new location. Peringa Park was developed in 1960 by the New Plymouth Council. Peringa means “Bellringer” in Maori and was accorded to the land in honour of Mr F.T Bellringer, a long standing Town Clerk of New Plymouth. It wasn’t until some time in the late 1970’s or early 80’s that the club was able to find the funds to lay the grass block that we have today.
